The Sforza Castle of Milan – Tour Itinerary
The guided tour of the Sforza Castle of Milan is a visit aimed at the discovery of one of the most beautiful castle in Italy, headquarter of the Visconti family in a first time and later of the Sforza family.
Francesco Sforza in the 15th century wanted the construction of the castle and at this purpose the architect Antonio Averlino, also named the Filarete, was called from Florence. During the reign of Ludovico il Moro the Sforza Castle was made even more beautiful thanks to Bramante and Leonardo da Vinci, which frescoed several rooms of the apartment of the dukes. Today only the Sala delle Asse remained.
In the 16th century the castle became a possession of the Spanish that used it as a military base and provided it with a new defensive system projected by Vincenzo Seregni. The castle did not change this military purpose even with the Habsburg and the Napoleon dominions. Successively Napoleon ordered the castle to be demolished, accordingly to the people of Milan that saw the castle as the symbol of the oppressive power of the dominators. In this period Antolini made his project for the new Foro Bonaparte, partly substituted with Parco Sempione.
Even though it was partly damaged the Sforza Castle survived the demolitions and was restored in the beginning of the 20th century by the architect Luca Beltrami that rendered it more alike to its original style.   In the end the Sforza Castle became possession of the city of Milan and today it is the location of some of the most important museums of the city, like the Pinacoteca, the Egyptian museum, The Museum of Ancient Art, the Museum of Musical Instruments, the Biblioteca Arte, the historical archive and Biblioteca Trivulziana, the Stampe Bertarelli collection.
